Much of the land in Cobb County once belonged to the Cherokee Nation. Despite promises by future president Andrew Jackson, the encroaching population did not stop growing. When the state of Georgia began to build a railroad from the Tennessee River to the Chattahoochee, the county grew even more rapidly. Cobb County was named in honor of Thomas Willis Cobb, U.S. representative, senator and Supreme Court judge. The city of Marietta was named after his wife.

Today, East Cobb has grown into a metropolis in its own right, no longer a bedroom community to Marietta or Atlanta. The Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department operates 42 park sites on more than 2,740 acres. Fishing, golf, tennis, swimming and other recreational pursuits are featured at numerous fine facilities, such as the Cobb County Civic Center, Aquatic Center and Gymnastics Center at Larry Bell Park, the Al Bishop Softball Complex and Lost Mountain Park. Jim R. Miller Park hosts the annual North Georgia State Fair.
